The Ministry of External Affairs on Wednesday (Nov 22, 2023) acknowledged a security-related discussion between India and the US, yet the specifics of the timing remain undisclosed.

MEA responds to media queries

Responding to media queries related to reports of discussions between India and the US on security concerns, the Official Spokesperson, Arindam Bagchi said: “During the course of recent discussions on India-US security cooperation, the US side shared some inputs pertaining to nexus between organized criminals, gun runners, terrorists and others. The inputs are a cause of concern for both countries and they decided to take necessary follow up action.”

Adding, “On its part, India takes such inputs seriously since it impinges on our own national security interests as well. And issues in the context of US inputs are already being examined by relevant departments.”

Financial Times Report

In a startling revelation, the Financial Times (FT) reported that the US government successfully thwarted a plot to assassinate Khalistani separatist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun on American soil. Pannun, designated a terrorist in India, holds dual citizenship in the US and Canada and serves as the legal counsel for Sikhs for Justice, advocating for Khalistan, a separate Sikh homeland.

This disclosure follows Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s claim, made approximately two months ago, accusing the Indian government of orchestrating the killing of another Khalistani separatist, Hardeep Singh Nijjar, in British Columbia. Despite New Delhi’s denial of any involvement in Nijjar’s death, the US collaborated with Canada in the investigation, with top Biden administration officials urging India to fully cooperate with the probe.

The FT report, relying on anonymous sources, raises critical questions about whether the alleged plot against Pannun was abandoned due to a US warning or if the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) successfully thwarted the attempt. Notably, the US took the unusual step of informing some of its allies about the alleged plot following Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Washington DC in June.

This incident adds a complex layer to international relations, particularly between India and the US. The need for transparent communication and cooperation in addressing transnational security challenges is underscored.

The revelation highlights the intricate nature of security threats in a globalized world, emphasizing the importance of collaborative efforts in preventing and addressing potential acts of violence on a global scale.
