A unit of 120 soldiers from the Indian Army’s Rajputana Rifles (Raj Rif) will travel to Sri Lanka for the exercise starting Aug 12, 2024. They will join an equal number of troops from the Sri Lanka Army’s Gajaba Regiment, an elite infantry unit known for its operational expertise. The focus of this year’s exercise is on joint operations in semi-urban environments, aligning with Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter, which deals with actions regarding threats to peace and security.

Objectives and Benefits

“Mitra Shakti” aims to improve the operational proficiency of both armies by facilitating the exchange of skills, experiences, and best practices. This collaboration is designed to enhance the armies’ abilities to handle contemporary security challenges, such as counter-terrorism and urban warfare. An official noted that this exercise plays a significant role in strengthening defence ties and improving coordination between the Indian and Sri Lankan armed forces.

Historical Context

The previous edition of “Mitra Shakti” took place in Pune, India, at the Aundh Military Station, with troops from the Maratha Light Infantry Regiment participating. The 9th edition included the use of drones and counter-unmanned aerial systems, as well as exercises for securing helipads and conducting casualty evacuations during counter-terrorist operations. Additionally, 15 personnel from the Indian Air Force took part in the event, highlighting the comprehensive nature of these joint exercises.
