In a significant diplomatic engagement at the BIMSTEC Foreign Ministers’ Retreat, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with Myanmar’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister U Than Swe. The meeting was crucial for addressing India’s pressing security and humanitarian concerns, which are pivotal for regional stability.

Border Stability and Displaced Persons

Jaishankar highlighted India’s urgent concerns regarding the stability of its border with Myanmar. The influx of displaced persons from Myanmar has surged due to ongoing conflicts and political instability. This movement of people poses significant security and humanitarian challenges for India. Jaishankar stressed the need for Myanmar to implement effective measures to manage and control the flow of refugees, ensuring border stability and safeguarding the affected populations.

Illegal Narcotics and Arms Trade

The meeting also focused on the rampant issue of illegal narcotics and arms trade along the India-Myanmar border. Jaishankar expressed India’s alarm over the trafficking networks that exploit the porous border to smuggle drugs and weapons. These illicit activities not only undermine regional security but also fuel insurgent groups operating in the area. India urged Myanmar to enhance its efforts in curbing these illegal trades through stronger border management and coordinated enforcement actions.

Insurgent Groups

Insurgent activities along the border were another critical point of discussion. Jaishankar underscored the threat posed by insurgent groups that operate across the India-Myanmar border, destabilizing the region and perpetuating violence. He called for increased cooperation between India and Myanmar to dismantle these groups and restore peace and security in the border areas.

Detained Indians and Cyber Scams

A pressing humanitarian issue raised by Jaishankar was the plight of Indians unlawfully detained by cyber scam gangs in Myanmar. These gangs lure individuals with false job promises and then detain them under coercive conditions. Jaishankar pressed strongly for the early release and safe return of these detained Indians. He underlined the need for Myanmar to take stringent actions against such criminal networks to prevent further victimization.

Support for Democracy

In addition to security concerns, Jaishankar reaffirmed India’s support for the return to democracy in Myanmar. He emphasized the importance of engaging with all stakeholders to facilitate a peaceful and inclusive democratic transition. India’s position underscores its commitment to promoting democratic values and stability in the region.
