Jaipur, one of the most vibrant cities in India, is gearing up for a historic occasion as it prepares to host the President of France, Emmanuel Macron, on January 25, 2024. This visit marks a two-day State affair, with Jaipur as the first destination before President Macron proceeds to Delhi for the Republic Day Celebrations on January 26.

According to sources, a focal point of this visit is the significant bilateral discussions between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Macron and delegation-level talks scheduled to take place in Jaipur.  There is also a roadshow planned.

The outcome of these talks is eagerly awaited, as major announcements, particularly in the defence and strategic sectors, are anticipated. India and France stand as key allies in the Indo-Pacific region, sharing a commitment to strategic autonomy and a stance against dependence on third-party nations in their pursuit of independent foreign policy decisions.

Defence deals between India and France

While sources have not confirmed the announcement of any defence deals during this visit, ongoing discussions reveal substantial collaborations. The procurement of 26 Rafale-Marine fighters for the Indian Navy’s aircraft carrier ‘Vikrant’ is one significant agreement in progress. Additionally, plans for producing three diesel-electric Scorpene class submarines in Mumbai are underway.

Speculation also surrounds the possibility of the Indian Air Force (IAF) considering the acquisition of two additional squadrons of Rafale fighter jets from the renowned French aerospace company, Dassault Aviation. As reported previously by Financial Express, these deliberations are anticipated to reach conclusive decisions by the end of 2024, with submarine deliveries potentially starting in 2031.

India-France Defence Cooperation

Defence collaboration has been a pivotal aspect of Indo-French relations, as exemplified by the unveiling of a comprehensive 25-year roadmap after Prime Minister Modi visited France last year. This roadmap outlines joint initiatives, including collaboration on developing the Indian submarine fleet, French assistance in constructing the “Shakti Engine,” and joint efforts in the Indo-Pacific region.

Highlighting the robust ties between the two nations, FinancialExpress.com reported earlier today, that French Rafale jets, along with a 95-member contingent from the French army are reaching India to participate in the upcoming Republic Day celebrations at Kartavya Path.

According to Defence Secretary Giridhar Aramane, also participating during the parade will be a 33-member band contingent from France, along with the aircraft of the Indian Air Force, one Multi Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) aircraft and two Rafale aircraft of the French Air Force will participate in the Fly-past.

France holds a unique distinction as the only country to have received the highest number of invitations to India’s Republic Day parade. President Macron’s presence at next year’s event will further solidify France’s standing, making it the country whose leaders have been chief guests at the Republic Day celebrations the greatest number of times, surpassing even the United Kingdom.

Historical engagements between India and France

This visit builds upon the historical engagements between India and France. Emmanuel Bonne, the Diplomatic Advisor to the French President, visited India ahead of President Macron’s arrival, engaging in bilateral discussions with Indian counterparts. Meetings with National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and External Affairs Minister Dr. S Jaishankar underscored the commitment to deepening diplomatic ties.

France’s participation in India’s Republic Day celebrations reflects the enduring friendship and mutual respect between the two nations. In the dynamic landscape of international diplomacy, the Indo-French partnership serves as a shining example of shared values, collaborative endeavours, and a commitment to fostering enduring ties for the mutual prosperity of both nations.
