The Indian Navy has bid a poignant farewell to the UH-3H helicopter after 17 years of distinguished service. The de-induction ceremony, held at INS Dega in Visakhapatnam on June 28, 2024, was presided over by Vice Admiral Sameer Saxena, Chief of Staff of the Eastern Naval Command.

A Legacy of Service

The UH-3H helicopter, inducted into INAS 350 ‘Saaras’ on March 24, 2009, at INS Dega, has been a cornerstone of Indian Naval Aviation. Originally brought to India in 2007 alongside INS Jalashwa, the UH-3H has played a pivotal role in various operations. Its advanced capabilities in Search and Rescue (SAR) missions, humanitarian assistance, disaster relief, security of offshore installations, and special operations have made it a versatile and reliable asset.

Remarkable Contributions

The UH-3H’s operational role in the dynamic maritime environment is etched in the annals of Indian Naval history. Its contributions to Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) operations have been particularly notable. The helicopter’s advanced SAR capabilities and logistical support were crucial during natural disasters, often making the difference between despair and relief, saving countless lives. The ‘Saaras’ squadron, adorned with the motto “Strength, Valour, and Perseverance,” consistently demonstrated unwavering dedication and vigilance in safeguarding the nation’s maritime boundaries.

End of an Era

The de-induction of the UH-3H marks the end of an era that introduced innovative capabilities in special operations and SAR missions. To honor its legacy, one UH-3H helicopter will be permanently displayed in a prominent location in Visakhapatnam, also known as the City of Destiny. This display aims to inspire future generations and commemorate the helicopter’s service.

During the ceremony, the Chief of Staff, Eastern Naval Command, handed over a commemorative plaque to the State Government. The plaque, received by K. Mayur Ashok, IAS, Joint Collector of Visakhapatnam, symbolizes the transfer of the aircraft and its enduring legacy.

Looking Forward

As the UH-3H bids adieu, its role will be taken over by the Sea King 42C helicopter at INAS 350. The Sea King 42C is expected to continue the legacy of operational power and capability, ensuring that the Indian Navy remains prepared for future challenges.

The helicopter’s 17 years of service have left an indelible mark on the Indian Navy, highlighting its importance in operations and missions that have saved lives and protected maritime boundaries. The de-induction event was attended by veteran officers and sailors of the UH-3H squadron, along with their families, who reminisced about the helicopter’s invaluable contributions.
