As the world celebrates International Women’s Day on 8th March, the Indian Army reiterates its commitment to empowering women in the Northeastern States. It is enabling them to realise their aspirations by actively engaging in a range of efforts to empower them.
In Nagaland, Manipur, and Upper Assam, the Indian Army has implemented significant programs for the pivotal gender to society in this region. Through targeted and ongoing initiatives, the Indian Army is promoting education, skill enhancement, health, and economic empowerment for women in the area, aiming for a more inclusive and gender-equal society.
The initiatives include Skill Development Programs that offer training in tailoring, handicrafts, computer literacy, entrepreneurship, and nursery teacher training. These initiatives are designed to help women become self-sufficient and financially independent, enabling them to pursue diverse career paths and generate income for themselves and their families.

In Nagaland, for instance, a Vocational Training Centre and Nursery Teachers Training (NTT) program have been established. In Upper Assam, projects such as providing sewing machines and upgrading Stitching Centres have been undertaken. Similarly, in Manipur, a Skill Development Centre has been set up in Senapati District, along with other projects in Kangpokpi District. Moreover, a Women Empowerment initiative in collaboration with the State Handicraft Department is underway in Manipur’s Bishnupur area.
The Indian Army has also organised health camps focused on women’s health, aiming to improve healthcare access in remote areas and raise awareness about health issues. Additionally, the Army supports women athletes by conducting tournaments for badminton, wushu, and volleyball, providing opportunities and assistance to budding athletes.
Women have carried economic and social development by playing key roles in various sectors. National Integration Tours are conducted with a focus on including young girls from the region, promoting their participation and exposure to various opportunities. Educational initiatives such as Pre-Recruitment Training for the Army, Basic Computer Training, and career opportunity lectures in the Armed Forces have also been carried out. These efforts are increasing access to education and empowering women to overcome disparity. These initiatives have paved the way for a brighter and better future for women and the society they live in.
