In a move to strengthen bilateral ties and enhance the capabilities of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), the Indian government has offered at least seven helicopters for use in the Philippines’ disaster response and humanitarian efforts.
The offer is currently under discussion between the two nations. The proposal was made during a courtesy meeting between Philippines President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr and Indian Ambassador to the Philippines Shambhu Kumaran.
According to a statement from the Philippines, President Marcos emphasized the need to bolster the country’s capabilities, particularly in terms of the coast guard and search and rescue operations, which are of paramount importance.
Indian Ambassador Shambhu Kumaran highlighted the ongoing discussions between the Indian government, the PCG, and the Department of Transportation (DOTr) regarding the supply of seven helicopters for maritime search and rescue operations and humanitarian services.
Kumaran noted, “The discussions are progressing well. The Coast Guard has shown a strong interest and has even test-flown the helicopters. I kindly request your consideration, as this could have a very positive impact.”
He further stressed that the helicopters offered to the PCG are originally designed for India’s Navy and Coast Guard, capable of supporting more extensive security operations, including transporting larger groups of people and cargo.
President Marcos expressed his intention to discuss India’s offer with DOTr Secretary Jaime Bautista, highlighting the potential benefits of such a program, particularly in strengthening search and rescue capabilities.
This development comes at a time when defence collaboration is becoming a significant component of the relationship between the two countries. Notably, the Philippines holds the distinction of being the first nation to purchase BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles from India. Both countries are also considering establishing a maritime dialogue to further enhance their partnership.
The Indian government’s offer of seven helicopters to the Philippine Coast Guard signifies a positive step in their bilateral relationship, with a focus on enhancing disaster response and humanitarian capabilities. The ongoing discussions indicate a promising partnership in the field of maritime search and rescue operations.
