On the 1st of November, Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of Bangladesh are set to unveil three important development initiatives, marking a significant step toward bolstering energy security and connectivity in the region. These projects, a result of Indian assistance, exemplify the collaborative efforts between the two nations to enhance regional infrastructure.
The first of these projects, the Akhaura-Agartala Cross-Border Rail Link, stands as a testament to the cooperative spirit between India and Bangladesh. Executed with an INR 392.52 crore grant from the Indian government, this rail link spans 12.24 kilometers, with 6.78 kilometers in Bangladesh and 5.46 kilometers in Tripura. It serves as an emblem of cross-border cooperation.
The Khulna-Mongla Port Rail Line Project, funded through a Government of India concessional Line of Credit, has materialized at a cost of USD 388.92 million. Its essence lies in the creation of a 65-kilometer broad-gauge rail route connecting Mongla Port to Khulna’s existing rail network. This endeavor unites Mongla, one of Bangladesh’s significant ports, with the broad-gauge railway network, fostering regional connectivity.
Unit II of the Maitree Super Thermal Power Plant, a crucial milestone in the realm of energy, is to be inaugurated. This super thermal power project, financed under the Indian Concessional Financing Scheme loan of USD 1.6 billion, is a substantial 1320 MW (2×660) plant situated in Rampal within the Khulna Division of Bangladesh. The successful implementation of this project is the result of the partnership between India’s NTPC Ltd and Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB).
Unit I of the Maitree Super Thermal Power Plant was jointly unveiled by the Prime Ministers in September 2022, and the inauguration of Unit II on 1st November 2023 is poised to enhance energy security in Bangladesh. These projects underscore the commitment to strengthening connectivity and bolstering energy security in the region, underpinning the diplomatic ties between India and Bangladesh.
