Multiple initiatives are being undertaken by the Indian Armed Forces to maintain a strategic edge over adversaries, including enhancements in warfighting doctrines, strategy, and concepts based on perceived threats. This was stated by Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan at an event in New Delhi on July 18, 2024, commemorating the 25th anniversary of Kargil Vijay Diwas.

Presenting the Kargil Honours at an event jointly organized by TV9 News and Salute (a military publication), the CDS thanked veterans and Veer Naris for their immense contributions and sacrifices during the Kargil War. He also praised the Indian Defence Industry for its support in national defence efforts.

Gen Chauhan emphasized that capability development, including infrastructure and robust operational logistics, is being pursued progressively through indigenous means to build future-ready Armed Forces. He highlighted ongoing reorganization and restructuring initiatives aimed at enhancing warfighting efficiency and effectiveness.

He underscored the imperative need for the Armed Forces to be prepared for multi-domain and multi-spectrum challenges, given the nature of future military and non-military security threats. “There is an inescapable requirement of seamless integration across all domains – land, sea, air, space, information, and cyberspace – and the infusion of interoperable systems among various branches of the Armed Forces,” he said.

Kargil Conflict

Reflecting on the Kargil conflict, Gen Chauhan noted its significance in underscoring the need for a robust and responsive defence strategy. “The Kargil conflict highlighted the importance of maintaining vigilance and preparedness for safeguarding our borders. It also emphasized the role of public and international diplomacy, which was effectively used to maintain the neutrality of inimical nations and gain global support,” he stated.

Integration of Armed Forces

Highlighting the steps taken toward the integration of the Armed Forces, the CDS mentioned that moving beyond jointness, the three services are now working toward promoting a joint culture and integrating themselves in several domains.

Given the constant battle of narratives attempting to shape perceptions worldwide, Gen Chauhan stressed the importance of the information domain as a key battle zone. He noted that the Kargil War, being the first televised war in India where free and open media existed, showcased the significance of managing the information domain effectively.

The CDS concluded by stating that the Kargil War has become synonymous with resoluteness, selflessness, fierce courage, and determination of the Indian Armed Forces. He urged the nation to focus on future threats and challenges, drawing inspiration from the bravery and sacrifices of those who fought in the Kargil conflict. This collective focus is essential to ensure that the Indian Armed Forces remain prepared to meet any threat with unwavering strength and resilience.
