Google is celebrating India’s 75th Republic Day with a Doodle featuring the parade on different screens throughout its history since the nation declared itself a sovereign, democratic, and republic state with the adoption of the Constitution in 1950.
Why is Republic Day celebrated in India?
The Republic Day is celebrated to mark the birth of the Republic of India. Over two years after Independence, on January 26, 1950, India’s newly drafted Constitution came into effect. It replaced the Act of 1935 as the document which governed this sovereign and democratic nation. With this, Dr Rajendra Prasad commenced his first term as the President of India.
How is Google celebrating India’s 75th Republic Day?
Google’s Doodle today takes us down the history of the much-awaited parade we see on each Republic Day. Featured by guest artist Vrinda Zaver, the Doodle showcases the parade as it would have been seen on different screens throughout the decades.
The Doodle shows the parade on various screens – a black-and-white television set, a colour TV, and a mobile phone.
On X, formerly Twitter, Google wished the country a ‘Happy Republic Day’ saying, “From black & white to colorful screens, Times changed, but the pride of watching the parade together remains the same.” A picture of the Doodle was attached to the post. In the picture, the black-and-white television set held a depiction of the first Republic Day celebration at Irwin Amphitheatre, now called Major Dhyan Chand Stadium. The colour TV marked the first time India saw the first coloured TV broadcast of the Republic Day in 1982. And lastly, the mobile phone stands as a representation of the time the Republic Day was live streamed on YouTube in 2013.
In 2023, artist Parth Kothekar from Gujarat meticulously created a hand-cut paper artwork, showcasing it as the Google Doodle to commemorate India’s 74th Republic Day.
