The flagship vessel of the Peruvian Navy, BAP Union, is set to arrive at Mumbai’s port on November 1, commemorating the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between India and Peru. This visit marks an important milestone in the relationship between the two nations.

India will be hosting the BAP Union from November 1 to 5 as part of its ten-month inaugural circumnavigation, following a successful visit to Singapore. Commanded by Commander Jose Luis Arce, the ship is carrying 97 postgraduates from the Peruvian Naval Academy and 149 active-duty naval personnel.

According to reports, the Peruvian ship is all set to offer a warm welcome to delegations from renowned Mumbai institutions with a dedicated space called the ‘Peruvian House’ to showcase Peruvian culture, history, and art.

Moreover, the personnel on board are involved in a specialized course, preparing them for leadership roles in the Peruvian Navy. They also serve as ambassadors of Peruvian culture and history, aiming to strengthen friendly ties with countries like India.

In a broader international context, Admiral R Hari Kumar, Chief of the Naval Staff, recently engaged in bilateral discussions with counterparts from Peru, Kenya, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and other countries during a visit to the United States. These discussions underscore India’s commitment to an open Indo-Pacific and adherence to the principles of the International Rules-Based Order.

A significant area for potential collaboration is in shipbuilding. South American countries, including Peru, Chile and Colombia boast of some of the best shipyards globally.

And while some countries in the region have expressed interest in small patrol boats for coastal security, there is also an opportunity for Indian shipyards to collaborate with SIMA in Peru and ASMAR in Chile, for fostering cooperation and knowledge exchange.

In summary, the arrival of the BAP Union in Mumbai signifies an important moment in the longstanding friendship between India and Peru. It also opens doors for cooperation in shipbuilding, contributing to maritime security and international partnerships. The significance of this visit extends beyond diplomatic formalities, showcasing the enduring bonds of goodwill and collaboration between these two nations.
