A new entrant in India’s consumer tech space, BytePe, founded by former Flipkart executive Jayant Jha, has launched a subscription-based smartphone service that allows users to access premium phones such as the iPhone 17 series through a fixed monthly fee instead of paying upfront or via EMIs.

According to their website, users can rent an iPhone 17 base model for Rs 3456 per month, as compared to the EMI of Rs 6492 per month if you purchase the same from the Apple website. iPhone 17 Pro is available for rent at Rs 6989 per month, as compared to the EMI of Rs 10,825 per month. iPhone 17 Pro Max is available for rent at Rs 7766 per month, as compared to the EMI of Rs 12,075 per month.

How does it work?

Under the model, users can select a device and subscribe for a 12-month tenure. Towards the end of the period, the user can upgrade to a newer device, return it, or continue their rental for another year. According to the company, the plan includes damage protection and is designed to offset repair costs during the term of subscription.

The company also offers an upfront purchase option that is bundled with insurance and a buyback value of up to 50% after 12 or 24 months. According to the company, the subscription offers a lower-cost, flexible alternative to traditional EMIs.

Cheaper than EMI

“After years in India’s consumer electronics industry, I’ve seen how long EMIs, outdated devices, and limited choices frustrate consumers. With BytePe, we are changing that,” Jayant Jha, founder and CEO, BytePe, said. “Our vision is to democratise luxury by enabling millions of Indians to access the latest technology through a smarter, more flexible ownership model.”

The company said users can subscribe to devices such as the iPhone 17, iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and Pro Max under BytePe’s monthly plans. For instance, an iPhone 17 (256 GB) priced at Rs 82,900 can be accessed through BytePe for a lower monthly outflow compared with traditional EMIs, though specific pricing details were not disclosed.

Credit card holders can use BytePe directly, while non-credit card users can opt for the company’s in-house financing service, BytePe EMI. After the 12-month term, subscribers may choose to upgrade, return, or continue to own the phone outright.

BytePe claims its model reduces monthly payments by up to 50% compared with conventional EMIs, while eliminating upfront costs and long-term lock-ins. Headquartered in Bengaluru, the company plans to expand beyond smartphones into other electronics and accessories. Jha said BytePe’s long-term goal is to redefine ownership by offering Indian consumers more flexible and affordable access to high-end technology.
