Former RBI deputy governor Shyamala Gopinath took charge as non-executive chairman of HDFC Bank on Friday. Gopinath is currently non-executive chairperson of Clearing Corp of India. She also holds directorship in several private companies. Her tenure would be three years, said HDFC Bank in a stock exchange filing.
Gopinath joined RBI as an officer in 1972 and rose up the ranks to become ED in June 2003 and, thereafter, was appointed as deputy governor in 2011. She served in that capacity for seven years, one of the longest tenures among deputy governors.
Gopinath handled key portfolios, such as financial markets, banking regulation and supervision. She also headed key committees, such as standing advisory committee on gold, working group on financial conglomerates and the financial markets committee. Her appointment at HDFC Bank has been approved by shareholders of the lender as well as RBI, the bank said. “Gopinath does not hold any shares in the Bank,” the filing said.
