SpiceJet, a domestic airline, announced on Wednesday that it has finalised a dry-lease agreement for five Boeing 737 aircraft, in preparation for the upcoming winter schedule.

SpiceJet’s plan for the upcoming winter schedule

The airline currently has 13 Boeing 737s and six regional jets in operation. As per an aircraft fleet tracking website, Planespotter.com, apart from the 13 Boeing 737s and six regional jets in operation, 34 out of a total of 53 aircraft held by Spicejet remain grounded.

SpiceJet is proactively bolstering its fleet in anticipation of the crucial winter schedule, a period characterised by increased travel demand. On July 25, the airline had already announced a similar strategic move, securing five leased aircraft to enhance its operational capacity.

What did the airline say?

“SpiceJet has finalised a lease agreement for another five Boeing 737 aircraft, further strengthening its fleet ahead of the upcoming winter schedule,” the airline said in a statement on Wednesday

Building upon this earlier initiative, SpiceJet officially confirmed on Wednesday that it has successfully finalised a lease agreement for an additional five Boeing 737 aircraft. This latest acquisition marks a major step in further strengthening the airline’s fleet, demonstrating a clear commitment to meeting the anticipated surge in passenger traffic during the upcoming winter months.

While most of these aircraft are scheduled to join the fleet in October, a few are expected to arrive a couple of weeks earlier, the airline said. These aircraft, inducted under damp-lease agreements, will serve the airline through the peak winter season and remain in operation until May 2026.

In a damp-lease arrangement, the operational crew is shared between the operator and the airline. SpiceJet said the airline is in advanced discussions to lease more aircraft ahead of the winter 2025 schedule, which starts from October every year.
