Adani Group’s Navi Mumbai International Airport Ltd (NMIAL) is set to roll out a digital-first passenger communication system when the airport starts commercial operations on December 25, with free high-speed Wi-Fi at the core of the initiative.
Passengers who connect to the airport’s Wi-Fi will receive real-time updates through the Adani OneApp, which will act as a virtual assistant and guide travellers across key points inside the terminal, news agency PTI reported citing familiar sources.
The move is aimed at reducing dependence on physical help desks and static display boards, while offering more personalised and timely information.
Features of Adani OneApp and free Wi-Fi
The app will push flight status alerts, boarding gate details, schedules and other operational messages directly to passengers’ smartphones. In addition, the Adani OneApp will provide details on food and beverage outlets, retail stores, lounges and other facilities, helping passengers plan their time better at the airport.
NMIAL will offer free Wi-Fi speeds of up to 10 Mbps across the terminal. Airport officials said the network has been designed to maintain high speed and stability even during peak hours, supporting messaging, digital payments, app-based cab bookings, emails, streaming and video calls, according to the PTI report.
NMIAL partners with BSNL to offer mobile network services
As part of its broader connectivity plan, NMIAL has partnered with state-run Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) to provide mobile network services at the airport. The tie-up aligns with the government’s ‘Made in India’ initiative, with BSNL deploying indigenous telecom infrastructure developed by C-DoT, Tejas Networks and TCS, the report mentioned.
BSNL is currently rolling out its indigenous 4G network across the country, which is 4G/5G-ready, and plans to upgrade to 5G in major metros, including Mumbai. At the Navi Mumbai airport, BSNL will offer voice and data services for passengers, airport staff and operational needs, complementing the Wi-Fi network.
Developed as Mumbai’s second airport, NMIA will initially operate a limited number of flights and scale up operations in phases.
The airport is being developed by NMIAL, in which the Adani Group holds a 74 per cent stake, and is scheduled to begin commercial operations on December 25. Built at an initial cost of Rs 19,650 crore, the first phase will have the capacity to handle 20 million passengers annually, with plans to eventually scale up to 90 million passengers, easing pressure on Mumbai’s existing airport and supporting long-term growth in air traffic.
