Mumbai airport operator MIAL on Tuesday (January 28) announced that Terminal 1 (T1) at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) will be demolished and redeveloped to enhance passenger handling capacity.
The construction will be carried out in carefully planned stages to minimise disruption. During this period, Terminal 2 (T2) will handle the additional traffic.
When will T1 undergo redevelopment?
The redevelopment project will kick off with the demolition of the existing terminal structure in November 2025, followed by the construction of the new facility. The revamped T1 is expected to be fully operational by 2028-29.
Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL), operated by Adani Airport Holdings Ltd (AAHL), said that the new revamped T1 will accommodate 20 million passengers annually, marking a 42% increase in capacity.
T2, Navi Mumbai to absorb traffic amid redevelopment
To manage the capacity gap during the redevelopment, T2, along with the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport (set to open later this year), will help absorb the traffic, MIAL said.
Jeet Adani, Director of AAHL, assured that efforts are underway to ensure a seamless transition with minimal impact on daily operations and the passenger experience.
“The team at CSMIA is working tirelessly with our stakeholders to ensure a smooth transition, with minimum disruption to daily operations or passenger experience. This redevelopment is not only about expanding capacity—it is about future proofing our city’s place on the global stage,” AAHL Director Jeet Adani said.
