The idea of adding another terminal and a second runway to the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad, after the current passenger traffic hits 45 million annually, is under consideration by the GMR Group which manages the airport.

GMR Airports’ Executive Director and Chief Innovation Officer SGK Kishore expressed confidence that the traffic would hit 45 million (annually) by 2030. Currently, it is at 30 million. He added that the ultimate of the airport would be 100 million passengers.

“We are expecting 45 million (per annum) by 2030. It is only an estimate and anything can happen. Based on the projections and based on what we have seen, we have to be proactive. We have started the planning (for the capacity expansion),” he said.

GMR Hyderabad International Airport has progressively developed its infrastructure to handle 34 million passengers annually. Originally built in 2008 with a capacity for 12 million passengers, the airport now operates with a single integrated terminal.

On Wednesday, GHIAL introduced a cutting-edge AI-powered Airport Predictive Operation Centre (APOC), marking a transformative leap in airport management and operations. This innovative platform integrates airside, landside, and terminal operations into a unified system, leveraging real-time data to enhance decision-making, reduce disruptions, and ensure smooth airport functioning, according to GMR officials.
