Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport is gearing up for a comprehensive refurbishment of its Terminal 2 (T2), beginning in April and lasting approximately six months. Originally constructed 40 years ago by the Airports Authority of India (AAI), the terminal will undergo a renovation led by GMR Airports Limited’s Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL).

The refurbishment aims to transform T2 into a state-of-the-art facility to enhance passenger experience and operational efficiency. Key upgrades will include the installation of new passenger boarding bridges featuring autonomous docking technology — the first of its kind in India. Additionally, modern ceilings, skylight designs, advanced flooring and improved road connectivity will create a more appealing and convenient environment for travelers.

The temporary closure of T2, lasting 4–6 months, is strategically planned to minimise disruptions. The newly developed Terminal 1 will handle the additional passenger load during the refurbishment.

DIAL estimates that by FY 2025-26, Delhi Airport’s domestic passenger traffic will reach its maximum capacity, making the enhancements crucial to meet future demand. The initiative aligns with DIAL’s long-term vision of establishing the airport as a leading hub for both domestic and international travelers across India and Southeast Asia.

The upgraded T2 is expected to reopen in Q2 of FY 2025-26.
