The Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), which is the operator of the Delhi airport, has said that the refurbishment work of the runway 10/28 has been completed.
Besides this, the operator stated that the technical integration of the runway RWY 10/28, also referred to as the second runway, is currently ongoing and is expected to be completed shortly.
Dense fog delays runway work
Recently, there were concerns regarding RWY 10/28 being non-operational. This came amid the impact that dense fog has had on flight operations.
Following refurbishment, the runway was initially set to become operational on January 19. However, unforeseen technical issues arose, preventing the completion of system integration.
In its release, DIAL said that the work is expected to be completed in 8-10 days. “DIAL is working diligently with its partner Honeywell to complete the process soon,” the release added.
The Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) is India’s largest airport and has four runways – RW 09/27, RW 11R/29L, RW 10/28, and RW 11L/29R. Earlier, DIAL had stated that the newly built fourth runway of the IGIA will be CAT III compliant on January 26. CAT III relates to flight operations conducted in conditions of reduced visibility.
As of now three IGIA runways are operational.
In the midst of flight disruptions caused by fog, the civil aviation ministry issued a directive earlier asking Delhi, Mumbai, and four other metropolitan airports to provide daily reports on such incidents. Additionally, they were directed to establish ‘war rooms’ to address passenger concerns.
