Adani Group’s Vizhinjam International Seaport has crossed the milestone of handling over 1 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) within just nine months of commencing commercial operations. Operated by Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone (APSEZ), the port has surpassed initial projections and is rapidly reshaping India’s maritime landscape.

Kerala Hails Landmark Achievement

Kerala’s Ports Minister V. N. Vasavan said, “Vizhinjam Port reaching 1 million TEUs within such a short span is a proud moment for Kerala and for India as it strengthens its position as a rising maritime power.” He also confirmed that the second phase of the project will begin soon, with railway and road connectivity set to follow.

Launched on December 3, 2024, Vizhinjam has already handled 460 vessels, including 26 ultra-large container vessels (ULCVs) measuring up to 399.99 metres. Under the concession agreement, the port was expected to operate at only 30% of its 1 million TEU capacity in the first year. Instead, it has achieved full-scale throughput in record time.

Strategic Edge and Future Plans

Officials attributed this success to close collaboration between the government, local communities, and APSEZ. The milestone highlights both the port’s structural advantages and the Adani Group’s operational expertise, positioning India to challenge regional transshipment hubs like Colombo and Singapore.

Looking ahead, the commencement of EXIM (export-import) operations in the fourth quarter of this financial year is expected to open new trade opportunities, strengthening Vizhinjam’s role as a southern gateway for global commerce. The port is also prioritising sustainability by cutting emissions, enhancing energy efficiency, and embedding green practices into its operations.

Crossing 1 million TEUs in record time is seen as only the beginning. As EXIM activity scales and eco-friendly initiatives expand, Vizhinjam could emerge as a global model for deep-water ports—an example of how India can deliver infrastructure that is both world-class and future-ready, officials added.
