Apprehending a mid-term election, the CPI(M) is likely to revoke the disciplinary actions taken against its top most Kerala leaders, VS Achuthanandan and Pinarayi Vijayan. The CPI(M) central leadership fears that the absence of both the Kerala chief minister and the party state secretary in the politburo could affect the proper implementation of organisational tasks, assigned by the apex decision making bodies, during elections.

The leaders could soon find themselves back in the politburo, once the central committee to meet at Kolkata this week formally “reviews” the punishment. Both the leaders, who are at loggerheads for the last some years, were suspended from the politburo for violating the party norms and ??making public statements on the internal matters of the party.??

The politburo meeting held in June ratified the decision and decided to ??take stock of the situation?? in its next meeting. But it did not discuss the issue in August meeting. ??We will reassess the actions in the meeting at Kolkata,?? a senior CPI(M) leader told FE.

He also acknowledged that the organisational issues in Kerala have also included in the agenda.

The politburo has already issued guidelines for the smooth functioning of lower level-party conferences. The politburo will also discuss the removal of central committee member EP Jayarajan for accepting money from a private lottery magnet. The party, howerver, is denying that the “reassessment” is not in the wake of a possible snap polls.

Another leader said: “This is our routine meeting. We couldn’t discuss the organisational issues in the last meeting because it was a special one to deliberate only on the nuclear deal. In the Kolkata meeting we will discuss all organisational issues.”

Some CPI(M) leaders had already hinted that the party congress to be held at Coimbatore in next March could be postponed if the present crisis with the government over the nuclear deal leads to a mid-term poll.
