In spite of its potential, the growth of India?s tourism and shipping industry?s has been slow. The high level group on services sector headed by Planning Commission member in charge of industry, Anwar-ul Hoda found that the two sectors have become uncompetitive.

The group, which would submit its report to Planning Commission deputy chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia on Wednesday, has suggested a slew of measures like rationalisation of taxes to give a boost to the tourism sector and abolition of certain taxes to give the necessary fillip to the shipping industry.

?India?s tourism is one of the most diverse. Yet the tourist inflow has been just about 4-5 million, while Malaysia attracted three times more,? a source involved in the making of the report said.
