Tata Motors is shortly going to hike prices of its cars and sports utility vehicles owing to the new emission norms that come into force from next month. President of the passenger car business unit at Tata Motors, Rajiv Dube, said the final call would be taken in by next week. ?We would decide the quantum of hike once we approach the deadline (April 1),? he said.
According to the new emission regulations, all carmakers would have to produce vehicles that suit the Bharat Stage IV (BS IV) emission norms. Manufactures would be required to make engineering changes to upgrade to BS IV level.
Initially, BS IV norms would apply only to the 13 cities ? New Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad, Agra, Pune, Surat, Ahmedabad and Kanpur. The rest of the country would have to upgrade to BS-III from the current BS II.
This could be the second time in a little over a month that the auto major hiked prices of its models. After the Budget proposed a 2% hike in excise duties on all non-petroleum products, Tata Motors followed other major carmakers like Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai Motors to pass on the price hike to customers.
The hike was in the range of Rs 4,000-Rs10,000. Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai Motors hiked prices between Rs 3,000 and Rs 25,000.
