Win Wind Power Energy Pvt Ltd, floated by the Sterling Infotech Group after it took over Finnish wind turbine manufacturing company Win Wind, is establishing production lines to manufacture wind turbines that will be grid-friendly and adaptable to the wind regime and climatic conditions in India. Win Wind Power Energy is setting up a state-of-the-art facility at Vengal near Ummudipoondi, north of Chennai, to house the assembly unit for 1 megawatt (mw) and 3 mw turbines. These turbines are said to be utility-oriented and most suitable for large wind farm developers.

The upcoming facility will also have blade production units for both types of turbines.

The projects are scheduled for commissioning in April 2009, Rajindra Valsalan, executive director, Win Wind Power Energy told FE.

The plant will have the capacity to assemble four machines and 12 blades per day. The capacity can be doubled when required, said Valsalan, adding that the technology for the blades is from Euros, Germany.

According to industry experts, Win Wind’s low speed turbine design makes it suitable for low wind conditions while catering for high energy yield, low maintenance and a long life. “The technology integrates the advantages of a modern direct drive and the compactness of a traditional high speed gear system. Low rotational speed, together with proper dimensioning, will reliability and high availability as well as high efficiency, even at low wind speeds,” Valsalan said.

Abu Dhabi-based Masdar holds a 26% stake in Win Wind Power Energy. Masdar is driven by the Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (ADFEC), a wholly-owned company of the government of Abu Dhabi, through the Mubadala Development Company.
