Several state governments have run up a bill, amounting to Rs 2.37 crore in air tickets on public carrier Indian Airlines and subsidiary Alliance Air issued on credit basis as on October 31.
The highest is by the Tamil Nadu government, with a bill of Rs 1.52 crore and the list includes Bihar, Tripura, Orissa, Manipur, West Bengal, Meghalaya, Andaman and Nicobar islands, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Goa, Gujarat and Maharashtra.
The lowest amount is owed by Manipur with Rs 3,000, while Meghalaya owes Rs 5,000 and Orissa owes the public carrier Rs 10,000.
Gujarat owes around Rs 20,000 while Uttar Pradesh owes Rs 27,000 (till May 31) and Andaman and Nicobar Islands Rs 81,000.
Among the higher amounts, Kerala owes Rs 32.70 lakh while Maharashtra Rs 20.71 lakh and Andhra Pradesh owes the State carrier Rs 14.17 lakh.
Bihar owes the public carrier Rs 1.04 lakh while Tripura is the highest among the north east states with Rs 6.5 lakh. West Bengal owes Rs 1.09 lakh while Goa owes Indian Airlines Rs 4.32 lakh.
Interestingly, the airline itself has a number of unpaid debts to lenders, which include the Central government and the Airports Authority of India (AAI) while the state governments owe much more to many other PSUs running into many hundred crore.
