CPI(M) cadres continued their rampage on Wednesday at Nandigram I block, with squads entering village after village while firing blanks in the air.

Almost 10 months after the Nandigram blockade began by Bhoomi Uchched Protirodh Committee (BUPC), it was for the first time that they are losing ground and looked for shelter in refugee camps.

At the end of nearly three days of sustained attacks by armed CPI(M) cadres, the BUPC strongholds were falling one-by-one. Ironically, majority of the CPI(M) supporters who had been staying in refugee camps for nearly since February have been returning to their homes.

Most of these villages are still beyond the reach of police and even media. Armed squads have dug up trenches preventing vehicles from entering the areas.

A visit to Nandigram on Wednesday revealed hundreds of panic-stricken villagers fleeing to safer places. BUPC leaders demonstrated to get the police to act.
