The Regional Transport Office has introduced Service Tax for issue of Learners’ Licences and Permanent Licences.

Official sources said the ST has been introduced without publicity and that the public would now have to pay Rs 60 as against the earlier Rs 30 for LLR. For Permanent Licence (PL) one should pay Rs.100 extra, apart from the Rs 250 fixed by the government.

The Vigilance and Anti-corruption police said the implementation, without any publicity, had led to complaints against RTO officials as people were unaware that they should pay the ST for even LLR and PL, an official said.

RTO officials said a hand-written receipt was now given for ST. However, they would be able to give computerized receipts in a day or two, once their software was upgraded.

Driving school owners have condemned the service tax and demanded to know what was the ‘service’ in issuing LLR or PL.
