Digital content is one of the most precious of man?s necessities and it needs storage. When hard drives were first introduced they offered 80 GB to 160 GB space. As our data storage requirement increased, we stirred to 500 GB hard drives, which appeared enormous until Seagate introduced GoFlex with 1 TB space.

Once again, Seagate has launched Free-Agent GoFlex Desk hard drive with 3TB storage. GoFlex Desk is world?s first 3TB portable hard drive and is compatible with USB 2.0 and USB 3.0.

Unlike its predecessors GoFlex and Goflex Pro, Seagate GoFlex Desk 3TB has a fixed base with a dotted upper body. It is light weight and appears like a simple looking rectangular box. The model which we got was in black colour. The base has USB 2.0 adapter with capacity gauge. The USB 2.0 port and power are placed together on the side panel. The white indicator light on the other side glows when the device is plugged in. We did feel that for a desktop version the base is a bit narrow and seems shaky. It should have been broader or a mount should have been provided with it.

GoFlex Desk comes with a USB 2.0 port in the box, but can be upgraded to USB 3.0 by purchasing the relevant adapter. The device gets recognised instantly when connected to Windows or Mac. We tested the drive by transferring data in real-time. To file a 700 MB single file from a PC, it took 42 sec, while a mix of files sized at 30 GB took just 30 min. Meanwhile, moving data from the GoFlex Desk to PC is faster as 700 MB file took 22 sec and 30 GB took 16 min.

The Seagate GoFlex Desk is a great performer in terms of data transfer. However, the exorbitant price takes it away from a general consumer?s reach. The package includes GoFlex Desk, 5 foot USB 2.0 cable, power supply, quick start guide and 3-year warranty.
