The Omar Abdullah government has retracted from its earlier decision to set up a separate Election Commission to conduct Panchayat polls in Jammu and Kashmir.
On Wednesday, the government approved holding of elections to rural bodies from March this year under its existing J&K Panchayati Raj Act, without extending any provisions of the 73rd amendment of the Indian Constitution to the state.
An official release issued on Wednesday said ?the state Cabinet which met here today under the chairmanship of chief minister Omar Abdullah approved to hold three-tier Panchayat polls in accordance with the existing law.?
