We all drive cars to commute to our work place and occasionally on a Sunday, we also go for a pleasure drive when the traffic is thin. But what about driving for thrills? A big ?No? is something we will hear in unison.
Then what to do with the Formula-1 driver in you? Well, just to satiate this ?need for speed? the computer peripheral giants Logitech has designed G25 racing wheels. To indulge in this adrenalin pumping sport you need a PC with moderate configuration and a decent size monitor. Of course, you need to buy this G25 Racing Wheel and a few DVDs of car racing games.
The Logitech G25 Racing Wheel with force feedback, simulates the cockpit of a typical race car. The two-motor force-feedback mechanism generates stronger, precise and realistic feedback ? like the pull of the G-forces on the sharp turns or the impact of crashing with walls and other cars.
The wheel has three modules, one each for steering, gear shift and pedals, all made with plastic, stainless steel and leather, replicating the look and feel of a race car cockpit.
The steering wheel is covered with leather with perfect grip and solid feel. It can be rotated 900 degrees lock-to-lock to navigate hairpin turns accurately. It also has two steel gear-shifter pedals just under ? where you hold the steering wheel while driving as in the real sports cars.
The gear shift module has the manual six-speed gearbox with a pushdown reverse gear. The knob of the gated gear shifter is also leather covered and feels very real. An automatic transmission select knob, a four-way directional pad and eight configurable buttons are also placed in here.
The third module has the accelerator, brake and clutch pedals mounted on a platform that has non-skid rubber feet and a carpet grip system, to ensure that it won?t slide across the floor. These three pedals feel and work precisely like real cars.
Setting up the G25 is quick and easy. First, install the drivers on your computer from the provided CD. Then connect the leads of AC power adopter, gearshift and pedal consoles to the steering console (the sockets are underneath). Mount the two consoles on the computer table with the inbuilt clamps and place the pedal platform on the floor. Connect the G25 to any free USB port and you are all set to vroom. Insert the car racing games DVD in the computer and enjoy the thrills of driving a Ferrari or a Mustang.
I tried this wheel and played Need for Speed ? Pro Street (though the G25 is designed for much higher level simulator games). After a few stints on racetracks, I opted for a more realistic, real life scenario ? the Nevada freeway. On the word go, I pressed the gas pedal hard and touched the 180-200 kmph mark in few seconds, but the novice in me could not control the car at that speed and I banged into the canyon wall and turned turtle. The impact simulated by the wheel was so realistic that I ducked for cover. After a few attempts, I could manage to drive the car, though at a realistic speed.
I could feel all the bumps and potholes on the road, and the drag on the curbs like real. I negotiated most of the bends on the serpentine road and absorbed all the shocks with ease except one ? the MRP of Rs 24,995. But don?t be dismayed! There is a cheaper option also, The Logitech MOMO for an MRP Rs 6,745 only.
