With the focus of World Environment Day 2008 on forest management as a tool for reducing greenhouse gases, it is time India took serious measures to preserve its dwindling forests. Efforts should be made towards replenishing its vast tracts of degraded lands and wastelands in a socially, economically and environmentally sustainable manner. This would not only have a positive impact on the ecology of our country but also supplement the income earning opportunities of the rural poor. The resultant increase in tree cover will also help prevent climate change.
