The Union steel ministry has asked all public sector units in the steel sector, including SAIL and RINL, to pay an extra of Rs 1,000 per month to each contract labourer over and above their regular wages. ?The plight of contract labourers is pitiable; we have therefore asked all steel PSUs to pay them an additional Rs 1,000 per month,? Ram Vilas Paswan, minister for chemicals, fertilisers & steel, told FE on Friday. This would mean an additional burden of Rs 55-60 crore per annum for steel PSUs. Contract labourers would also henceforth be eligible for benefits such as health and school facilities for their children, Paswan said.
