The Orissa government is likely to clear the Rs 2,200 crore shipyard project at Dhamra in the state. Bharati Shipyard Ltd and the Kolkata-based Apeejay Surendra Group are proposing to set up the first shipyard in Orissa.

The high-power single window committee, which is meeting Tuesday evening, is expected to clear the project, paving the way for signing an MoU for the purpose with the promoters.

The shipyard project will come up in three phases over an area of 1,050 acres near the Dhamra Port. The master plan will be ready by next year and the construction of the shipyard is expected to start by the middle of 2008. The first phase of the project will be completed by early 2009 to begin commercial production by middle of the year.

On completion, the shipyard will generate employment opportunity for 41,000 people. ?Orissa has an edge over other states for location of shipyard because of the availability of steel, large number of skilled and unskilled manpower, besides the conducive coastline?, says a member of the Single Window.

The requirement of steel in shipbuilding and repairing, which would be about 75,000 mt per annum in the first phase of the project, will go up to 2,30,000 mt per annum by end of the second phase. In the final phase, the steel requirement will go up to 4,50,000 mt, said the source.
