At a time when the world?s perception about India has changed to one of the fast emerging markets that offer ample opportunities, India simply cannot afford to lose the steam generated. Mumbai is the engine (?Identity insularity?, Feb 5) that powers the country?s economic growth bogies, and has always occupied a top slot in the Indian financial space. The city is unique in its own way and so are its people. Two most important things that need to be admired about the city are its cosmopolitan culture and a highly disciplined workforce. That is what keeps the city agog with flourishing economic and cultural activities. In a rapidly industrialising country, the migration of vast numbers to regions where economic opportunities are available is both natural and inevitable?especially in a free and democratic country like ours. Issues can always be sorted out across the table instead of resorting to violence. The recent developments in Mumbai are unfortunate.

Lack of fair play

It?s not fair that even after securing approval two years ago, the Posco project has made little headway so far (?Tilting the odds?, Feb 5). It is still struggling to secure land and mining rights. Kundremukh Iron Ore Corporation?s claim for preference over Posco in regard to allotment of mines needs to be examined from the standpoint of fairness. Global players will be miffed at this lack of fair play, for sure.
