The latest mouse-keyboard combo, the 2.4 GHZ wireless keyboard mouse combo, offering from Tech-com is a mixed bag to say the least. The bundle is quite good as it comes with 3 batteries (2 for the keyboard, 1 for the mouse) and a protective pouch for the mouse to save the sensor from any dust.
The build quality of the keyboard is acceptable although some consideration could have been given to the space bar which was imbalanced and produced a lot of sound when typing. Tech-com has used a two-tone colour combination for the keyboard with the keys covered in a matte black finish while the multimedia controls are covered in red. Unfortunately, the plastic finish of the multimedia keys make them a bit fiddly and give the keyboard an overall toy look. The effect is better presented on the mouse, with the metallic red covering the mouse keys and palm rest with the rest of the mouse in vanilla black.
The nano receiver, a feature seen mostly in the higher end wireless keyboards and mice actually makes good on the ?plug and forget? promise made by Tech-com since it is just larger than a coin and is shared by both peripherals thereby leaving you with a free USB port. This is quite similar to the Logitech unifying receiver.
The mouse features forward and backward keys, which when coupled with the frictionless scroll wheel prove to be very helpful for navigating through large webpages or documents. The button on the centre calibrates the mouse if it starts lagging, a common occurrence on entry level wireless sets.
While the mouse is suitable and ergonomic for right handed users, it is more or less unusable for southpaws. The keyboard is quite comfortable but that becomes moot when there are some design mis-steps present which made us commit errors due to strange key placement. The multimedia keys on the other hand were very responsive and convenient to use. Using the volume controls in particular makes browsing through a music collection a breeze without opening the media player and thus eliminating the need to multitask while working. We just wish there was an included software bundle to configure some the keys to the user?s liking. The combo is best suited for right handed users wanting an affordable wireless solution keeping in mind that it may take a while to get used to the key placement on the keyboard.
