Global pharmaceutical major Johnson & Johnson is setting up its largest consumer product manufacturing facility in India in Telangana, for an investment of Rs 400 crore. The facility is coming up near Kothur in Mahabubnagar district. The first phase of the unit, having an initial capacity to produce 18,000 tonnes, is expected to be completed by 2016. Its foundation stone was laid on Thursday. The plant is expected to provide direct and indirect employment to over 1,500.

Talking to the media, Vikas Srivastava, MD, Johnson & Johnson Consumer (India), said the facility will be spread over 47 acres. ?The facility will be Johnson & Johnson?s largest manufacturing facility in India,? he said.

?We will be investing around Rs 400 crore in phase 1 to build a world-class facility to manufacture personal hygiene and skin care products. The facility will also create significant employment opportunities for the local community and the talent pool in the region,” he said.

The company has two plants, one each in Baddi and Mumbai, besides a few third-party providers. The two big business verticals for the company are babycare and female hygiene.

The unit will facilitate business for the domestic market initially, especially for the South, which contributes 30-40% of its total business.

?With this new facility, we aim to further strengthen our commitment to consumers in India which is a strategic market to improve the health and wellbeing of the society,? he said.

The plant design will incorporate many innovative elements to ensure energy efficiency, water consumption patterns and waste management in a sustainable manner. It will leverage radiant cooling technology, natural lighting and water recycling. The facility will be developed as per WHO?s good manufacturing practices, the company added.
