With India witnessing a huge demand for compact desktops with TFT-LCD (thin film transistor?liquid crystal display) monitors, US-based infotech major Hewlett-Packard (HP) is now betting big on the country and expects its entire portfolio of desktops to be shipped with TFTs by the year-end.

Chandrahas Panigrahi, product manager, commercial desktop category, personal systems group, Hewlett-Packard India, says, ?Of the total desktop shipped in 2007, 50% was with TFT monitors. During the current year as of now, it is around 80% and is expected to grow to 90% in the next three to six months. We expect our entire portfolio to be shipped with TFTs by the end of 2008.?

Nearly 1,000 personal computers (PCs) were shipped every hour during January-March 2008, according to an IDC survey. In the first quarter of 2008, computer shipments stood at more than 2.1 million against 1.9 million PCs in the corresponding period last year, the survey said. Sumanta Mukherjee, manager, computing products research, IDC India, says, ?There is increasing adoption of TFT/LCD monitors in India and this has also pushed up the annual sales value of desktop PCs.?

With the addition of the latest features in desktops today (both hardware and software), the utility of a desktop has increased and are being used as a multifunction device. ?They are increasingly being used as a television, music system, game console and the computer itself. This has created the shift from using box monitors to slim line TFT-LCD monitors.? HP also plans to launch its advanced version of HP TouchSmart desktop, in India by August first week. Panigrahi adds, ?We plan to launch a better version of the TouchSmart PCs by July end or August first week as we see huge demand for the touch screens in India.?
