There was a time when there were many small private banks available for acquisition at an affordable price (?High acquisition cost makes ICICI look for organic growth?, June 4). However, by the way the valuations have moved up recently, the number of such banks have come down, making the consolidation process expensive. Many small banks have braved to put up an excellent performance and boost earnings per share. For bigger banks, organic growth is always there but it?s an extremely slow process to meet. They would, therefore, be under pressure to raise the tier I and II capital, besides consistently enhancing the market share.

Deal drag
It is because of the lack of political courage on the part of the UPA government that the Indo-US nuclear deal has been needlessly dragged for such a long time.
