General Motors India, the wholly-owned subsidiary of General Motors Corporation (GM), has opened its digital vehicle design studio in Bangalore.
Inaugurating the studio, GM vice-president of Global Design Ed Welburn said the design studio would further strengthen the company’s global presence and provide world-class design services to GM’s operations in India and other parts of the world.
The new facility, which is located at the GM Technical Centre-India (GMTCI), is India’s first digital design studio for vehicles.
With help from technologies such as a clay milling capacity, along with supporting equipment and virtual reality technology, he said the design studio will contribute to the mid-cycle enhancement of existing models and the advanced design of future products.
The studio will also play a key role for the GM design network as a ‘listening post’ in India to gather and understand local product design requirements, Welburn said.
“The studio in Bangalore will serve as an important component of GM’s 11-member global design network,” he said, adding, “By leveraging the unmatched global resources and best practices of the GM group, it will carry out important projects for GM in India, as well as work with other design facilities on important projects for GM on a worldwide basis.”
GM’s design studio in Bangalore would house around 70 engineers by the end of this year. Currently GM has around 1,000 employees involved in various R&D related works at its GMTCI.
