Once you are through with your marriage rituals, get set for some adventure?not romance. For, honeymoon itself is on a makeover mode. Romancing in the hillside or a boat ride are passe?GenNext wants adrenaline-packed stuff. And tourism companies and tourism boards smell a cash cow in the trend.
For example, Chennai-based Peekay Holidays is offering adventure holidays for newly weds. ?Honeymoon is now part of the overall wedding plan. Young couples are wanting to start their life on a high note and are opting for adventure sports, cycle tours, treks and river rafting as part of their honeymoon itinerary,? says the company?s general manager Frederick Durai. The company has already customised adventure packages for nearly 120 just-married couples last year and the honeymoon segment alone contributed 40% to its overall business.
Similarly, Tourism New Zealand is offering a 11-night package in the Kiwi locale priced at Rs 1.1 lakh per person. This includes airfare, accommodation, transportation in that country, breakfast and sightseeing. Around 21,000 people from India flew to New Zeland last year, of which 2,000 were honeymooning couples. ?We expect a 15% rise in the honeymoon segment this year. Increasingly, young and upwardly mobile Indians want to explore destinations on their own and New Zealand promotes self drive in a big way,? says Kiran Nambiar, manager, India, Tourism
New Zealand.
Tourism Malaysia has gone a step further and positioned the islands of Langkawi, Penang and Pangkor for honeymooners. Windsurfing, sailing, snorkelling and scuba diving are major attractions out here. Newly weds constituted 22% of the total tourist arrivals in Malaysia between January and September last year. Honeymoon packages for Malaysia are priced upwards of Rs 32,000 for seven days and six nights.
Mauritius is offering undersea walks, and blue safari submarine rides to newly weeds and packages are priced upwards of Rs 49,000 for six nights and seven days. Neighbouring Sri Lanka is opening up the skies for honeymooners by laying emphasis on activities such hot air balloons and parasailing.
