The Prasar Bharati-operated public service broadcaster, Doordarshan, plans to set up very small aperture terminals (VSATs) at 70 locations across the country with the hub in Delhi.

According to a well-placed DD engineer, VSATs are being set up to strengthen news gathering fecilities, commonly known as digital stations, for news gathering. “Establishment of the VSAT network will enable feeding of news from those 70 spots to regional news units through satellite. This network will also enable voice and data communications among the locations where the VSATs are being set up,” the engineer said.

DD’s proposal for a high definition television (HDTV) pilot project has recently been approved.
