Cataract operations for dogs and cats? Well, it is nothing new but doctors here say that it is fast catching up in this ancient Tamil city which is known for its eye care facilities.
S Jagannathan, a city doctor, was worried about his 13-year old pet dog, Tommy, which was stumbling frequently while walking. His vet advised him to get Tommy operated for cataract, which in Madurai has become very common these days.
Veterinary surgeon, Dr Pothy, a retired Deputy Director of Animal Husbandry department, sought the help of G Bhaskararajan, a leading ophthalmologist in the city who operated on Tommy and fixed an intra ocular lens.
Jagannathan is very happy to see Tommy back to his usual playful self and walking around freely indicating that the operation was successful.
The only advice Jagannathan received from the ophthalmologist was that his pet should stay away from smoke and dust. He now plans to get its other eye operated.
Bhaskararajan also conducted a similar operation on a cat which was equally successful.
