Bhoruka Power Corporation Ltd (BPCL), a part of Bangalore-based Bhoruka Group, plans to set up 300 Mega Watt thermal power plant in Karnataka. The company would invest around Rs 1,200 crore in the project, Bhoruka Group chairman S N Agarwal said.

The company has submitted an application to the government for 300 acres of land to establish the power plant. The project would be executed through Bhoruka Energy, a 100% subsidiary of BPCL. The coal for the thermal plant would be procured from Indonesia. ?We may even acquire a captive coal mine in Indonesia. We are still working on it but nothing has been finalized yet,? Agarwal said.

In fact, the company is participating in the bidding floated by the Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Ltd (KPTCL) in January to supply power to the state. The KPTCL?s bid was to procure up to 2,000 MW, which could be supplied by the entities from any place across the country and produced through any source.

If the company could win the bid, it would take that opportunity to supply the power produced through proposed thermal power project to the state or it would be operated as a merchant plant. ?If everything goes well the thermal power plant could be commissioned in 2011,? he said.

Currently, BPCL has been generating around 100 MW from various locations in Karnataka, of which 12 MW comes through wind energy and remaining power is generated through hydel plants. The company is in the process of adding another 100 MW by 2010 by generating another 30 MW through wind and 70 MW through hydel plants.

If the company could set up thermal power plant as per the schedule, its power generation capacity through various sources like wind, thermal and hydel would increase to 500 MW in the next 3-4 years.
