Megastar Amitabh Bachchan, Deepika Padukone and Irrfan Khan starrer “Piku” has crossed the Rs 100 crore box office collections mark worldwide. Piku had surprised everyone with its longevity at the box office as its collections are rising slowly but steadily without let up even 18 days after release.
‘Piku’ box office collections had opened to a good enough start at Rs 5.32 crore on day 1, but nothing that the mega star Amitabh Bachchan was once used to during his most charismatic era. While Big B’s dominance of the box office is no longer what it once used to be, still he has retained his pull power to a degree and that enabled the movie to raise its day 2 collections to Rs 8.70 crore. However, by day 3, the floodgates had opened and they soared sensationally on its first Sunday to Rs 11.20 crore. Day 4 collections were not so good at Rs 4.40 crore, indicating the weekend is over. The working week weakness affected the collections further with day 5 (Tuesday) collections adding up to Rs 4.10 crore. The figure further dropped to 4 crore on Day 6 (Wednesday) and 3.7 crore on Day 7 (Thursday). On Friday, Day 8, when Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma starrer Bombay Velvet released, aside from others, Piku collections reached Rs 3.10 crore for a total domestic take of Rs 44.52 crore. On day 9, Piku collections did very well indeed as it matched Bombay Velvet with a take of Rs 5.10 crore.

Sunday, Day 10, was yet another surprise that Piku sprang on the industry. It managed a big surge with its box office collections jumping by as much as Rs 6.40 crore. However, to put things in perspective, its Monday, Day 11 take was just Rs 2.60 crore. Days 12, 13 and 14 were remarkable in the fact that each one brought in the same amount – Rs 2.20 crore. Day 15 broke the 3-day routine, but left nothing much to cheer about at Rs 1.35 crore. Day 16 brought in Rs 2.40 crore and on the next day (17) it added Rs 2.75 crore to the domestic total, taking it to Rs 71.72 crore.. On day 18, Piku added 0.92 crore.
If we add the foreign take too, the collections rise to a humongous Rs 101.95 crore. The foreign returns have been good for Piku and this is a reflection of Amitabh Bachchan’s abiding popularity in the Indian-origin population abroad.
Bachchan took to social media to express his excitement over the film’s amazing run.
“‘Piku’ world wide 100 crore..! Wow! never expected this from the film. Thank you all, you made it happen,” the 72-year-old actor posted on Facebook.

With Big B showing exemplary staying powers against new releases, especially Bombay Velvet (check photo gallery), Piku has got a much-needed booster shot that has elongated its lifespan to pad up its box office collections further and it now stands a good chance of making its entry into the Rs 100 crore club. However, from today, the movie faces a new release, this one starring Kangana Ranaut, Tanu Weds Manu Returns, which has made a good start with an occupancy rate of 60% in theatres.

Piku movie is directed by Shoojit Sircar.

‘Piku’ has been getting a lot of good reviews and even during its shooting it received widespread publicity as the producers gave the media almost a free hand to click Amitabh Bachchan as he traipsed across the streets of cities while shooting for the film. However, even then, the opening day’s footfalls managed to reach only 40% – this was much lower than that of Akshay Kumar starrer Gabbar Is Back which topped out at 75% a week earlier.

Having said that, surprisingly, Gabbar Is Back is likely to take much of the money away from ‘Piku’ even though this will be its second week. This is unexpected as Gabbar Is Back was expected to fade in the face of the onslaught by an Amitabh Bachchan starrer backed by teh presence of the ever-stellar Irrfan Khan and of course Deepika Padukone.
