A devastating cloudburst struck Chasoti (also spelled Chishoti/Chosoti) village in the Kishtwar district of Jammu and Kashmir on August 14, 2025. The massive downpour triggered sudden flash floods along the Machail Mata Yatra route, resulting in the destruction of makeshift markets, community kitchens and security outposts packed with devotees. Initial rescue operations reported at least 60 fatalities, over 100 injured, and hundreds still missing as the disaster coincided with large gatherings for the annual pilgrimage to the Machail Mata temple. Authorities swiftly suspended the pilgrimage and launched large-scale rescue efforts, deploying civil, police, army, and disaster response teams to aid the affected region. (Image: PTI)
