Fly Mobiles, the second most selling brand in Russia, on Wednesday launched three entry-level smartphones in the country with the motive to jump into the smartphone segment in India and establish itself.
“India missed our spotlight due to the brand’s efforts to establish in Russia, Ukraine and the other CIS countries. But now we are back and we want to establish ourselves in the Indian smartphone segment,” Rahul Goel, president of Fly Mobiles, said. “We have been in the industry for a decade now and are excited about our new range of Octa-core phones. Fly India will focus on bringing exceptional smartphones from its global portfolio. We believe that the India has huge potential in this category and are confident of satiating the needs of the smartphone generation,” he added.
The timing for the UK-based firm, might seem a little off in the first place due to the recently released IDC report that states that the smartphone market is declining in India but the brand is not all bothered by it. “A 4-5% slump in the market is not a worry for us. We are not here to grow in double digits or take away a huge share of the market, we are here to establish our product. We want to sell over a million devices for the current year and we are confident of achieving the figure,” Goel said
Asked about the strategy that the firm will use to establish itself, Goel said that the firm will employ a product-oriented approach and will also concentrate on the after sales service.Currently, Fly will sell three models priced between Rs 2,999 to Rs 6,999 only through Snapdeal in the entry level category of smartphones. When asked about Fly’s plans to utilise the “Make in India” initiative, Goel said that the brand is in talks with the government but gave no more details on it.
The UK brand, which is a part of Meridian Mobile — apart of the Meridian Group, will face tough competition from several key players like Xioami, Lava, Micromaxx and Karbonn who are engaged in a war to come out as a clear winner in this segment. SAR Group, makers of Wynncom brand of mobile phones, had acquired a 55% stake in the UK-based Fly Mobiles’ business in India and Saarc regions in 2011.
