Meta Connect 2024: Meta today announced Orion, previously codenamed as Project Nazare, claiming it to be the most advanced pair of augmented reality (AR) glasses ever created. Orion “combines the look and feel of a regular pair of glasses with the immersive capabilities of augmented reality – and it’s the result of breakthrough inventions in virtually every field of modern computing.”

With a lightweight design resembling ordinary eyewear, the glasses allow users to interact with large holographic displays, placing both 2D and 3D content in their environment. This capability transforms any physical space into a canvas for digital experiences, making interaction in real time a seamless process.

Orion’s integration of contextual AI is another game-changing feature. The smart assistant, Meta AI, can comprehend the user’s surroundings and provide tailored assistance. For example, users can ask for recipes based on ingredients in their refrigerator or manage their schedules while on a video call, all while keeping their hands free.

Meta emphasizes that Orion is designed for daily wear, featuring transparent lenses that allow users to see others’ eyes and expressions, fostering a sense of presence during interactions. This focus on social connectivity is crucial, as it aims to eliminate the barriers often posed by other mixed reality devices.

The glasses are built upon years of innovation, miniaturizing advanced technology to create a comfortable and stylish form factor. Orion boasts the largest field of view yet in AR glasses, facilitating immersive experiences ranging from life-size holograms to expansive digital workspaces.

Meta is offering select employees and external audiences the chance to test the glasses, helping to iterate and enhance future consumer products. The company says that that while Orion won’t be available for consumers just yet, it’s a very advanced prototype that’s ready for development. Instead of rushing to sell it, they want to keep improving the technology internally to create an even better product for consumers in the future.
