As the festive season approaches, many Indians over 40 are feeling lonely, with a recent survey showing that 34% are turning to online platforms for companionship. This trend is particularly concerning because many of these individuals are married but feel emotionally disconnected from their partners.
The survey, conducted by IPSOS for Gleeden, the world’s largest extramarital dating app, highlights how festive celebrations can intensify feelings of loneliness. The joy of the season often feels empty for those who lack meaningful connections. The findings reveal that happiness is usually felt more deeply when shared with others.
Many respondents reported feeling neglected and having communication issues in their marriages, which leads to low self-esteem and unmet emotional needs Sybil Shiddell, APAC Manager at Gleeden, pointed out that loneliness among married individuals over 40 has increased in recent years, especially during festive times. “The ageing population is becoming more lonely, particularly during celebrations. Emotional support is essential, and we aim to provide a discreet space for those seeking help with their feelings,” she explained.
The survey also found that 34% of participants are dissatisfied with the physical aspect of their relationships, prompting some to look for connections outside their marriages. This search for companionship is driven by both mental and physical loneliness, leading many to online platforms for support and new romantic experiences.
The festive season often heightens feelings of isolation, turning what should be a joyful time into a source of stress and anxiety. A striking 54% of respondents expressed a desire for intimacy with someone other than their spouse. This longing is especially noticeable in big cities like New Delhi (70%), Mumbai (65%), Bengaluru (50%), and Kolkata (57%).
Additionally, the survey revealed interesting views on love and loyalty among this age group. About 45% believe it’s possible to love two people at the same time, while 25% admitted to having cheated on their partners after being together for five years. Many cited physical attraction as the main reason for their actions.
For those over 40, the everyday pressures of life make it hard to open up emotionally. This fear of being judged often drives them to seek support online during the festive season, where they can connect without the stigma attached to traditional dating. These platforms offer a safe space to reminisce, share laughs, and build meaningful connections, which are crucial for those feeling isolated.
