Google has responded to online reports claiming it was “sunsetting” Gmail, possibly the most popular and widely-used email service around. The global search engine giant has confirmed Gmail isn’t going away and is in fact “here to stay” ending all speculation that suggested otherwise. Google is known to kill products every now and then and so, ever since a rumour broke that Gmail too was going to be axed by the end of this year, it was enough to create a frenzy on social media.

Social media platforms buzzed with apprehension as news circulated that Google would sunset Gmail later this year, purportedly due to the uproar over the Gemini image generation. The frenzy ignited from a circulating message, accompanied by a manipulated image, which traversed platforms like X (formerly Twitter) and TikTok, with some attributing its origin to the latter.

The message, laden with farewell sentiments, lamented the end of Gmail’s legacy in facilitating seamless communication and fostering connections. “After years of connecting millions worldwide, enabling seamless communication, and fostering countless connections, the journey of Gmail is coming to a close,” the message read, delivering a blow to its loyal user base.

It ominously stated, “As of August 1, 2024, Gmail will officially be sunsetted, marking the end of its service. This means Gmail will no longer support sending, receiving, or storing emails,” triggering widespread concern among netizens.

Google swiftly intervened with a ‘community clarification’ on X, aiming to dispel the misinformation and assure users of Gmail’s continued operation, indicating their awareness of the rumor’s gravity on social media platforms. Google takes up the Gmail X account to clear up the confused air and tweets, “Gmail is here to stay.”
