Google has restored certain prominent Indian apps, such as Naukri, NaukriGulf, and 99acres among others, to its Play Store, following the government’s firm stance against the removal of Indian apps. According to PTI, sources have indicated that the reinstatement of these apps is primarily due to their compliance with Play Store Billing policies, rather than direct government intervention.
Sanjeev Bikhchandani, the founder of Info Edge, confirmed in a post on X that many Info Edge apps have now returned to the app marketplace. Info Edge (India) Ltd initially reported the removal of its apps but later confirmed their restoration on the Play Store. However, concerns have been raised regarding the consumption model’s impact on in-app billing, prompting discussions to address potential long-term repercussions.
IT and Telecom Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw too emphasized the necessity of protecting startups, affirming that their removal from the Play Store is unacceptable.
In response to the situation, apps such as Naukri.com, 99acres, NaukriGulf, and Shaadi.com have been brought back, having aligned with Google’s consumption model for payments. However, apps like Bharat Matrimony, Altt (formerly ALTBalaji), Kuku FM, Quack Quack, Truly Madly, and Stage OTT are still absent from the Play Store. A meeting has been scheduled with Google and affected app developers to resolve the dispute and ensure the protection of Indian startups.
Google reiterated its commitment to enforcing payment norms, expressing disappointment over companies’ non-compliance and warning of further actions, including app removal, to enforce policies amid ongoing disputes over service fees.
